Program Description

CIS & QM offers an intensive program leading to a certificate in Computer Information Systems (CIS). The program is directed at degree-seeking undergraduate students who wish to gain information technology (IT) exposure without having to pursue a full degree program in CIS. The primary objective of the program is to offer an option to non-IT professionals and non-CIS majors to develop an initial expertise in the use of information technology in the development of computer-based business information systems. The program should be of interest to students who wish to consider the use of information technology in the development of information systems in their own professional disciplines. The certificate in CIS program courses are offered primarily face to face at the San Marcos, Texas Campus during the day.

Program Objectives

The CIS certificate program focuses on a wide range of IT skills as well as knowledge of computer-based systems design issues that are essential to anyone engaging in the design and implementation of IT solutions. The IT skills include: introductory and advanced computer programming, systems analysis and design, database design and implementation, and working knowledge of IT tools to design, develop, and implement e-Business applications.

The primary objectives of the certificate program are:

  1. To provide students with an opportunity to acquire a strong background in programming skills in information technology, understanding of the concepts and issues pertaining to systems & database design as well as the implementation of a variety of IT systems. More specifically, these skills include:
    • Identification of issues and strategies for designing and implementing computer-based information systems in a variety of computing and business environments, including e-Business, internet, and intranets.
    • A thorough working knowledge of at least one modern computer programming language, including Python, C# and JAVA.
    • Working knowledge of at least one modern database management system, such as SQL SERVER, DB2, or ORACLE.
    • Knowledge of systems analysis and design principles.
    • Knowledge of key issues in the design, development, and deployment of e-Business applications.
  2. To provide non-CIS majors seeking information technology skills an opportunity to acquire the basic IT foundation so that they may compete for entry-level positions in information technology.

How to apply to the CIS Certification Program

1. You must be enrolled at Texas State as an undergraduate.

  • Non-Texas State students must first secure admission to Texas State by following the normal application process.
  • Current Texas State students must apply to the program by completing the application form available from the CIS department Office or online.

2. You must be in Good Academic Standing

  • Enrollment in the CIS Certificate program is open to:
    • Non-business college majors who have attained junior/senior standing and who are in good academic standing.
    • Business majors who have been admitted to the McCoy College of Business, have been assigned an appropriate major code other than 521 (major code of CIS), and who are in good academic standing at Texas State.
    • You cannot be on Academic Probation
    • Applicants must have a 2.25 overall GPA.

3. Submit the application

  • Complete the electronic form or come by the CIS office to complete a hard copy.
  • Attach a copy of your unofficial transcript to the application and submit or give the completed hard copy of the application packet to the CIS Department Administrative Assistant in the CIS office, Suite 404 in McCoy Hall.

Students must be formally accepted into this program before any previously completed CIS courses will be applied towards CIS Certificate. 

Upon receipt of submitted form and transcript, the department chair will review your application packet. Students will be notified by the department through email of their acceptance or denial and the reason for denial. If accepted into the program, the student will receive an acceptance letter along with a course outline.

Once your have been accepted your Degree Plan will be updated by the McCoy Business Advising Center.

Certificate Completion Requirements

A minimum GPA of 2.25 with no course having a grade of 'D' or 'F' is required in order to receive a certificate of completion for the program.

Upon completion of certificate course requirements, you must complete an "Application for Graduation." The certificate will be posted to your transcript upon the successful completion of your degree.
